PNG IN THE ASIAN CENTURY DG

PNG IN THE ASIAN CENTURY 02 Dec 2012

By Dorah Gawi.

Extending Papua New Guinea's existing relationship with our neighbors in the Asian region in terms of trade and investment, and preparing our businesses and economy for new opportunities is what Prime Minister Peter O'Neil aims to do, when speaking on PNG's participation under the Asian Century.

The Prime Minister says PNG will soon be a major exporter of LNG to the world, Asia in particular, and with the development of a second LNG project, there will be further development of our vast gas reserves, and oil reserves in the medium term, and clearly PNG is well placed to meet the growing energy needs of the Asian region.

Mr. O'Neil says PNG is also witnessing a significant expansion of our mining sector, and the Ramu Nickel project will soon reach the production and export stage.

He says within 3-4 years, PNG will be a significant exporter of nickel as well as gold and copper to the Asian region and beyond.

Mr. O'Neil when speaking to Australian Journalists says PNG's potential to help meet the energy and mineral needs brought about by Asia's growth are considerable, and in that regard, we will be Australia's competitors in this sector.
