INDEPENDENT CONSUMER & COMPETITION COMMISSION APPROVES CODE SHARE AGREEMENT OF AIRLINES PNG AND 14 Mar 2013

The Independent Consumer and Competition Commission announced that they will allow the code-share agreement between Airlines PNG and Virgin Australia for the Port Moresby-Brisbane route. Commissioner of ICCC Dr. Billy Manoka announced this on Thursday, saying effective airline competition means low fares and efficient services, which in turn encourages the growth of tourism, creates income earning opportunities amongst other spin offs. Dr. Manoka says ICCC has provisionally assessed the arrangement as enhancing rather than lessening competition, and will save cost to assist travelers and the parties involved to compete against Air Niugini's code share agreement with Qantas. Airlines PNG submitted an authorization to ICCC for the proposed code share agreement with Virgin in November last year claiming it will improve its financial viability and create competition for the other major airlines servicing that route. Meantime, Dr. Manoka says the Commission is now in the final stage of making a decision and the application and has issued a draft decision.
