TWO CHILDREN AMONG 11 PEOPLE RESCUED OFF THE COAST OF MADANG 12 Mar 2012

By Julianna Waeda: Two children were among eleven people rescued in Madang Province over the weekend, after their banana boat traveling from Long Island to Saidor on mainland Madang capsized on Saturday. This rescue was due to the quick response by the National Maritime Safety Authority’s manned PNG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, with logistical support from the Rescue Coordination Centre in Australia and the Provincial Disaster Office in Madang. N-M-S-A was alerted of the incident by Consort Express Lines, after their ship MV Bougainville Coast rescued three people between Long Island and Saidor on Saturday afternoon. All survivors safely disembarked at the Port of Basamuk, and were transferred to the custody of local authorities, who took them to the local health centre for a medical check-up. By 1pm on Sunday afternoon, all survivors were airlifted by helicopter to Madang’s Modilon Hospital for a thorough medical examination.
