GAZELLE DISTRICT OPENS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE & MERI SAFE HAUS
GAZELLE district in East New Britain celebrated the twin opening of two important buildings last Friday.
The buildings include the Community Development Centre and the Meri Seif Haus.
The project is the second of its kind in the country, built by the national government in partnership with district development authorities with the first in Imbonggu district in Southern Highlands and the second in Gazelle.
This project is counter-part funded by the national government with K3 million, alongside the Gazelle District Development Authority. Under the leadership of Gazelle MP and National Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Jelta Wong who assisted with K1.3 million.
At the ceremony, Minister Wong said that the occasion was not just a celebration of brick and mortar; it is a celebration of hope, resilience, and renewal.
“It is a testament to our shared commitment to creating a safer, more supportive environment for the women. And children who have experienced the unimaginable.
This center will serve as a sanctuary, a place where healing begins. And where women can reclaim their agency and dignity,” he said.
He said the creation of the safe house is a vital step in addressing the pervasive issues of domestic violence and abuse.
It represents a place of refuge, a home for those seeking safety and solace. We will empower these women to rebuild their lives and strengthen their families and communities.

Minister Wong said the initiative does not belong to any individual organization but the people of Gazelle district.
“We must work together with community members, local leaders & organizations to raise awareness, educate and support one another.Where every woman feels safe and valued.”
THe minister stated that the centre should be an advocate for those who feel voiceless and ensure that help is available for anyone who needs it.
He encouraged open conversations about domestic violence, and support programs that promote healthy relationships and community well-being.
He mentioned that he is filled with hope for the future, knowing that they have taken a significant step forward. Let us remember that the work ahead requires our collective effort and compassion. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of the women and families we serve”.
