GAZELLE MP CALLS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE & DISCIPLINE
Gazelle MP and Fisheries & Marine Resources Minister Jelta Wong has called on students in his district to study hard and excel academically.
This call was made at the twin opening of a four-in-one classroom for both Wairiki and Tauran Primary Schools in the lower Toma area of Toma Valley, early this week.
At the ceremony, he revealed that East New Britain province is currently placed 17, in the country in terms of overall education performance measured against the rest of the country.
Minister Wong urged students in the district to refrain from bad habits including alcohol and drug abuse and instead concentrate on their studies.
“We need you to do better and bring our province up to the top five. Back to what it was 15 years ago,” he said.
He said that East New Britain was once the cream of the country in education and many people served in high offices but is no longer to be these days.
He said that the district is now focused on building the infrastructure for the students and that the onus is now on the students to translate the sacrifices of their parents into attaining good results in school.
He said that the district, through the decision of the Gazelle District Development Authority Board (GDDAB) has approved many new infrastructures for schools in the district with Vunairoto, Wairiki and Tauran already opening new four-in-one classrooms.
He said similar infrastructure ready to be opened include Vudal and Open Bay Primary Schools while Lamarain Primary is set to open a new two-in-one classroom next week.
His office and the GDDAB is committed to building the much needed infrastructure, not only in primary schools but in the secondary schools as well, with more projects currently in progress while others are yet to start.
Minister Wong said this is also in line with the plans of the provincial education board where some schools in the district would be elevated to junior high schools status including Tauran while Vunairoto will be a George Brown Campus.
