A student who was a victim of bullying in a school in Goroka was suspended yesterday after he exposed the matter to the media, through an article by one of the local dailies, Post Courier.

The 13-year-old boy attending Kama SDA Primary school in Goroka, was bullied after class last Wednesday following an argument in the classroom over “a sitting space”.

The boy was assaulted after school and sustained a swollen face.

His mother, Jayne Safihao, a senior journalist, employed by the University of Goroka, reported the matter to the police, since her son sustained serious facial injuries.

The boy’s case was reported in the media and following this, he was suspended, as the story reached the school hierarchy’s attention.

Mrs Safihao claimed she was not advised why her son was suspended. The Mother is curious as to under what by-laws of the School Student Behaviour Management Policy process, was her son given an indefinite suspension.

Ms Safihao said the decision is unfair, and as victim, he will be missing out on 2 tests & also on mock exams in the coming weeks.

She says this will affect her child’s education adding that the school’s decision is inconsiderate of the student’s welfare.

Ms Safihao a concerned parent says school bullying is a common issue nationwide and, in all schools, and that the Kama SDA School should be thankful that it has exposed such, and work together with authorities to address the serious issue of school bullying.

She is currently unaware of the specific reasons for the suspension of her child who is a victim of school bullying.
