The Capital Rugby Union Vodafone Boromas emerged victorious in the inaugural Vodafone Challenge Cup, defeating the Morobe Rugby Union LCA Hammerhead Sharks 19-7 in a fiercely contested match that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

Led by captain Jonah Tokiong, the Boromas capitalized on key moments to overcome the underdog Hammerheads, who delivered a spirited performance.

The match began with a tense first half as both sides struggled to find their rhythm. While the Boromas sought to exploit errors, the Hammerheads’ resolute defense kept the game scoreless for much of the half. It wasn’t until the final quarter before halftime that the deadlock was broken. A quick play by fly-half and captain Tokiong set up fullback Ron Butler for a try, sending the Boromas into the break with a 7-0 lead.

The second half saw the Hammerheads emerge with renewed determination. For over ten minutes, they dominated territory, pinning the Boromas deep in their own half. Their efforts paid off when Himson Tukar latched onto a Nelson Paul grubber kick to score on the left edge, leveling the score at 7-7.

What followed was a bruising arm wrestle, with both teams plagued by handling errors and lapses in discipline. However, the Boromas gained the upper hand when a penalty try was awarded off a dominant scrum, shifting momentum firmly in their favor.

As the Hammerheads pressed hard to equalize in the dying minutes, the Boromas’ defense held firm. Winger Ben Lasiel sealed the victory with a late try, securing a 19-7 win and claiming the coveted Vodafone Challenge Cup.

Speaking after the match, Boromas captain Jonah Tokiong praised his team’s resilience. “It was a tough game, and credit to the Hammerheads for pushing us to the limit,” he said.

The Hammerheads’ spirited performance earned admiration despite the loss. Morobe Rugby Union General Manager and Hammerheads Team Manager Greg Golman expressed pride in his team.

“The boys gave their all, and I’m pleased with their effort. Well go back, address our weaknesses, and come back stronger next year,” he said.
