COMMISSIONER of Police David Manning today commended Jiwaka Police for recovering a military issued hand grenade in Banz yesterday.

Commissioner Manning said the recovery and arrest of two male suspects depict the Constabulary’s ambition in tackling armed tribal conflicts across the highlands region.

He said effective intelligence gathering and networking with the community paid off when police traced the two suspects, pounced on them inside the Banz market, and recovered the bomb in the ensuing pursuit.

The Commissioner said police will widen their investigations with the aim of ascertaining how these two civilians had acquired this highly lethal military weapon.

He said the Assistant Commissioner of Crimes Hodges Ette will be tasked with the responsibility of consulting the PNG Defense Force for assistance in the course of this investigation.

Meantime, Police in Banz also uprooted a large quantity of marijuana stalks, and arrested two men for cultivating the illegal plants.

In a similar operation police also raided a village and recovered some home-brewing apparatuses near Banz town.

Commissioner Manning said the Constabulary will continue to clamp down on drugs, home brewed liquor, and illegal weapons, in the highlands region and across the country.

He said these illicit items were contributing to the general law and order situation across the country and he is grateful for the busts, recoveries and arrests achieved Jiwaka Police, over the past two days.
