THE public service NIUCARE Policy has been put on hold and will now be under review, according to the Secretary of the Department of Personnel Department Taies Sansan.

Under the NIUCARE Policy, public servants were to make a fortnightly contribution of 2.7% of their annual base salary to cover medical care claims and funeral NIUCARE covers expenses and transportation to the burial place.

A senior public servant, who chose to withhold their name, spoke to the FM100 newsroom & welcomed the news that the policy had been put on hold and review.

They say the NIUCARE policy would be beneficial for public servants however, due process was not followed and it was very much an ambitious policy that was rushed to implementation.

The public servant stated that while the amended public service management act 1995 mentions health insurance, it does not address funeral expenses.

As a result, there are currently no general orders or specific policies guiding the public servants’ contributions to funeral expenses.

The public servants emphasized that a thorough process and awareness needs to carried out before they can implement such a policy.

Earlier, the Department of Personnel Management released a circular by the Secretary Taies Sansan, stating that he NIUCARE Policy was a first for the National Public Service and would be jointly funded by the government, as its seed capital and by public servants, as their contributions towards the NIUCARE Scheme.
