Outgoing Australian High Commissioner, John Feakes shaking hands with PM Marape

Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko says the news of Australian High Commissioner to PNG His Excellency, John Feakes’ retirements came as a shock to Papua New Guinea.

Minister Tkatchenko in a statement on Friday, said High Commissioner Feakes’ retirement will leave a huge void to be filled.

“Your dedication, commitment, leaderships and energy to strengthen our bilateral relations in all its facets during your term as High Commissioner has been exemplary and will no double see tangible outcomes that will benefit this country for many years to come.

“Indeed, your direct approach and guidance on important mattes of commons interest will be missed and I found it an absolute pleaser to work with you.”

He said whilst it would be sad to see the High Commissioner go, he is confident that Mr. Feakes will find the same success and happiness in retirement that he experienced during his career and especially in his time in Papua New Guinea.

“I greatly appreciated your relationship and your devoted contribution to our country and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.”

Mr Feakes had recently announced of his retirement due to personal reasons. He had served as High Commissioner since September 2023. Mr Feakes previously served in Port Moresby as First Secretary from 2000 to 2003 and deputy High Commissioner from 2008 to 2012.

He is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and most recently High Commissioner to Fiji.
