NATIONAL ICON PASSES ON THE CUSP OF PNG’s 50th INDEPENDENCE

Just as the country was looking forward to celebrating it’s 50th Independence Anniversary, it has come to bear the unfortunate news of the untimely passing of a man revered as one of the big four and the last founding father of the most diverse nation on the planet.

After much speculation on social media this morning, news has been received of the passing of a stalwart son of New Ireland.

The New Ireland Provincial Government have released a statement confirming the untimely passing of Rt. Honourable, Sir Julius Chan GCL GCMG KBE PC MP, the Governor of New Ireland Province and on of Papua New Guinea’s founding fathers.

After seeking approval from the Family of the Late Sir Julius, the NIPG have conveyed the information of the passing of Sir Julius, stating that it is with profound sadness and sorrow, they announce the passing of their esteemed father and PNG’s last man standing, Rt Hon Sir Julius Chan.

According to the statement, Sir Julius passed away peacefully this afternoon at 12:30pm at his beloved home in Manmantinut, Huris surrounded by family and friends.

The Family have extended a word of thanks to all those who have stood by him, and those who have shared his legacy throughout his political life from Pre-independence to the time of his passing.

Sir Julius was a political icon transcending generations and his legacy will remain forever in the pages of Papua New Guinea’s history books and more so in the hearts of so many.
