ABAU MP APPEALS TO NATIONAL GOVT. TO INCLUDE FINANCIAL LITERACY IN SCHOOLS

Making reference to the people of China who have mastered the trading of money and have become one of the most influential countries in the world, the Member for Abau, Hon Sir Puka Temu said “money makes the world go round” and has recommended to the National government and the department of Education to introduce financial literacy as a compulsory subject to the formal education system.

In a press conference with the Mama Bank last week, Sir Puka Temu stressed on the importance of access to credit schemes and financial literacy for the rural masses in Papua New Guinea.

In saying this, the member for Abau made an appeal to the Minster for Education Lucas Dekena, Prime Minister James Marape, Governor for Central Province, Rufina Peter and the Central Education Board to seriously consider the introduction of a certificate in Business in the schools.

Sir Luka Temu said elementary to high school students have a long year exposure in the education system and at grade 12, they only walk away with one school lever certificate instead of graduating with two or three certificates in that long process of learning.

He strongly recommends that the Marape-Rosso government particularly to the Minister for Education introduces financial literacy as a “compulsory subject” like mathematics, English and Science.

Sir Puka Temu reiterated that financial literacy and the basic knowledge of how to manage money is the knowledge that every citizen in this country needs right now.
