SEDDON TALKS OF GOVERNMENT REFORMS

By Nigel MADO
Speaking on the Nasfund FM100 Talkback show this morning, Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Gary Seddon has shared how much effort the Government has put into ensuring to ensure the nation’s flag carrier fly’s into the next 50 years.
Seddon discussed the context of government reforms affecting state-owned enterprises (SOEs). He noted that Prime Minister James Marape’s reform program, initiated in 2019, aimed to enhance the effectiveness, productivity, governance, and accountability of all SOEs, including Air Niugini.
“At the end of the day, all of our SOEs are established to provide services and utilities to benefit the citizenry, improving livelihoods, well-being, and welfare,” Seddon said.
He went on to add that state-owned enterprises are designed to provide essential services, and sustainability is a key factor in their long-term success. Seddon acknowledged that privatization could play a role in ensuring sustainability, but he stressed that it must be implemented correctly.
“The Prime Minister and his cabinet, along with our minister, are providing the appropriate leadership and stewardship to ensure that any privatization process benefits service delivery.”
Seddon stated that this is not about making huge profits for the airline. While there must be a return on investment, the primary objective of Air Niugini is to provide safe, competent, affordable, and accessible air transport services for the people of Papua New Guinea.
He said ANG is looking forward to a time when private sector involvement can enhance the airline’s operations, but for now, is grateful for the government’s ongoing support.”
