PNG COMMEMORATES LATE GRAND CHIEF 4TH ANNIVERSARY

TODAY marks the 4th year anniversary of Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare.
Every year after his passing in February 2021, the country sets aside a today 26th February as day to commemorate his lasting memory as the first prime minister and ‘father of the nation’, and a political leader since, (1936 – 2021), and today marks his 4th year memorial anniversary.
Some provinces have activities planned for today, and here in the Nation’s Capital, Governor for National Capital District, Powes Parkop has put together a special Virgil event honoring the legacy of the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.
The Virgil will be held at the Sir John Guise Stadium from 5pm to 8pm and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the founding father’s contributions and other past notable leaders who have shaped the nation’s history.
Another event will be held at the University of Papua New Guinea where the Institution will celebrate SANA- the Late Chief’s autobiography, reflecting on his life as a man of wisdom and a leader documenting his struggles, triumphs and aspirations of this country that emerged from colonial rule into independence in 1975.
UPNG’s Student Representative Council President, Mr. Clinton Maliaba made an announcement that a special event will be held at the UPNG Waigani Campus, Forum Square and will feature guest speakers, cultural performances and reflecting on Grand Chief’s vision for the country.
Meanwhile, New Ireland province also paid tribute this morning with Parade and Flag raising ceremonies at the Stanfield Memorial Park.
As the nation Commemorates Late Grand Chief’s 4th memorial anniversary, it also prepares the nation for the big 50th Independence Anniversary in which Late Grand Chief was at the forefront in ushering this nation to becoming an Independent nation.
