The Minister for Works and Highways Solan Mirisim has challenged the Department of Works and Highways (DOWH) engineers and architects to embrace innovation and explore smart infrastructure.

The Minister made this call during the Department’s 50th Golden Jubilee logo launch to commemorate PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations on Tuesday 04th March, 2025.

He said they must explore smart infrastructure, A1-driven engineering, and renewable energy solutions to build a sustainable Papua New Guinea.

He says the world is challenging, and climate change demands that they create infrastructure that can withstand disaster, weather, and support long-term development.

The Minister highlighted that the Department of Works and Highways will be building the future shifting into the next chapter of 50 years. By 2040, the government envisions a country where no village is left isolated, where every province is connected by modern biometric highways, and engineers and builders will lead this passive innovation. By 2050, in aligning with PNG’s Vision 2050, the goal is to become a smart, innovative, and competitive nation, one where infrastructure is powered by green energy, digital energy, and intelligent engineering.

He says engineers are the one that will connect Papua New Guinea through roads, bridges, and ports connecting the diverse communities and driving national development.

He further called on every engineer, technician, policymakers, and citizen, that this is their time to shape history as the future belongs to those who dare to dream and act boldly.
