Morobe Governor Luther Wenge in support of the establishment of the national petroleum authority bill stressed on the importance of processing minerals, oil, and gas resources within the country to enhance revenue generation and support other sectors in the country.

Wenge made these remarks on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday 12th 2025.

As these resources are non-renewable, Wenge emphasized the need for a strategic approach in the exploration and exploitation of these valuable resources.

He said large sums of money are being spent on exporting oil and gas for the country’s revenue overseas and push for these resources to be processed, add value and also stored in the country.

Wenge called for strict vetting of companies involved in mineral, gas and oil exploration to ensure that licenses are granted to companies committed to processing these resources within Papua New Guinea.

Wenge also urged the government to support local talent, noting that universities in the country are producing professional geologists and scientists who possess the expertise to contribute to the country’s exploration activities.
