In Parliament on Wednesday, March 13th, the Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Timothy Masiu, proposed that the face of the late Grand Chief Sir Julius Chan be featured on the K100 note.

This tribute honors Sir Julius Chan’s legacy as the architect of Papua New Guinea’s national currency, the Kina and Toea.

Masiu made this proposal during a tribute in Parliament, highlighting Sir Julius Chan’s crucial role in PNG’s financial independence.

He noted that it would be fitting for Sir Julius, known as the father of the Kina and Toea, to be celebrated on the K100 note.

Masiu also reminded Parliament that the K50 note already features the face of the late Grand Chief Michael Somare, PNG’s first Prime Minister.

This proposal follows a similar call from Abau MP Dr. Puka Temu, who on Tuesday recommended that a K1000 Kina bill be issued with Sir Julius Chan’s face, marking the 50th anniversary of PNG’s independence.
