NCD Governor Powes Parkop has expressed deep frustration over the lack of impactful action in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in Papua New Guinea. Speaking at the recent GBV strategy review, Parkop criticized government agencies, civil society, and leadership at all levels for failing to take decisive action.

He said despite the great work of NGOs and civil society, the country has yet to see real, impactful measures from the government, and is at a crisis point with concrete action is needed.

The governor emphasized that while awareness programs and summits have taken place, they remain largely symbolic without strong enforcement mechanisms and government backing.

The recent violent deaths in the capital and that of Margaret Gabriel has reignited national outrage over gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea. Governor Parkop described these cases as a grim reminder of the country’s escalating GBV crisis.

“The rates of violence against women have skyrocketed. We don’t need a survey to tell us that—it is happening right in front of us,” Parkop said.

He stressed the need for urgent intervention, calling on law enforcement and the judiciary to ensure perpetrators face swift justice.
