Up to ten thousand people in remote Karanda area of Kuare Local Level Government, situated between Ialibu Pangia and Kagua Erave Districts in Southern Highlands Province, are in desperate need for upgrade of their feeder road.

Danny Karayo, Deputy Head Teacher of Karanda 1 Primary School raised the concern on behalf of the people and public servants in that area.

He says there were five primary schools, five elementary schools, two aid posts and a number of churches in the seven council wards of Karanda area which has a population of more than 10,000 people.

“Most of our school subsidies are spent excessively on transport and labor.

Paying labor from Kuare station to Karanda is too expensive, and sometimes schools take risks to hire cars to transport our goods though the road here is not transport worthy,” he said.

Karayo also called on Kagua Erave District Development Authority to consider providing support using some of the earthmoving machinery belonging to Kagua Erave Holdings.

It is understood that Kuare LLG has 17 council wards, 10 of whom are in Ialibu Pangia and 7 are in Kagua Erave District, though they have only one LLG President who has most times been overlooked by both DDAs.

The need raised by Mr  Karayo is on behalf of the seven councils of Karanda that are Kagua Erave part of the LLG.

He said the appeal goes to both Ialibu Pangia and Kagua Erave District Development Authorities as well as Southern Highlands Provincial Government.

“This road was built by Grand Chief Sir Yano Belo back in the 70s and 80s. Over time, the road has not been upgraded by successive governments. The result of negligence by both Ialibu Pangia and Kagua Erave DDAs and SHPG has made schools in Kuare 7C suffer,” Karayo said.
