Wabag Primary School was privileged to host the former PNG Orchids Captain Cathy Neap as part of the NRL in PNG program, themed, ‘League Bilong Laif’ Program.

The program aims to inspire primary school students, both male and female, aged 6 to 12 years, to excel in their education and sports, using rugby football as a catalyst to promote positive behavior, healthy lifestyles, and the importance of education.

Cathy Neap, a renowned figure in women’s rugby league, was warmly welcomed by school teachers, students, and community leaders alike.

Chairman of Wabag Primary School Board and President of Wabag Rugby Football League (WRFL), Kepakan Peter Pakau, expressed his gratitude for Neap’s visit, emphasizing that it was a meaningful return to her roots and a valuable initiative for the local youth.

In attendance were also representatives from the Provincial Administration, including Provincial Sports Officer Jonnah Mackay, as well as local rugby league fans, supporters, and women involved in rugby league.

During her speech to the students, particularly the young girls of Wabag Primary School, Cathy Neap encouraged them to start building a better future now.

“We inherited a character that God gave us—the heart to love and promote peace. As Engans, this gift is already in us,” Neap said.

“The choice is now in your hands, and your future starts today, not tomorrow,” she said.

Following the presentation of rugby balls and uniforms to Wabag Primary School and WRFL, Cathy Neap proceeded to the Wabag Primary School oval, where she led coaching drills with the school girls.

The drills were designed to not only teach rugby skills but also to promote teamwork, discipline, and the values of hard work and respect.

The visit concluded with a sense of excitement and inspiration, leaving the students eager to apply the lessons learned both in their sports and academic pursuits.

Neap’s visit underscores the power of sports, particularly rugby league, in shaping young minds and encouraging a healthier, more educated, and peaceful future for the children of Wabag.
