The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) students have issued an ultimatum to the Chief Ombudsman Commissioner, demanding action on constitutional and governance concerns raised during a student-led forum.

On April 17, the Student Representative Senate (SRS) formally presented a petition to the Ombudsman Commission, reflecting issues discussed during the Studentsโ€™ Open Forum held on March 26, following the government’s ban on Facebook on March 24.

SRS President, Brent Karol, said the petition was compiled from verified sources and represents Unitech student views under Section 19 of the Constitution.

The petition, divided into three key parts, was delayed to accommodate the universityโ€™s graduation.
Chief Ombudsman Commissioner, Richard Pagen, confirmed the Commission will file to represent student concerns in court and is already acting on all three issues raised.

He said one matter is before the Supreme Court, one under active investigation, and one already being addressed internally.

While addressing the students’ petition, Pagen also raised concerns about political instability caused by repeated no-confidence motions and called for reforms such as direct election of the Prime Minister.
He further highlighted issues with the administration of public funds by MPs, suggesting public servants should manage funding programs for better accountability.
