BURNT DOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL REBUILT THROUGH COMMUNITY SUPPORT

THE Mapumanda Primary School in the Pilikambi LLG of the new Lagaip District in Enga Province is a proud recipient of a new classroom through the efforts of the Sambe Unity Development Association (SUDA) and the local community.
SUDA President George Iki (pictured) mentioned that Mapumanda Primary School has risen from the ashes, thanks to the dedication of the local community and timely intervention from the Sambe Unity Development Association (SUDA).
He mentioned that the school was completely destroyed during the 2022 national elections, leaving students without proper learning facilities.
“Despite the devastation, Head Teacher Mr. Kandeo Aperao, the Board of Management (BOM), and the surrounding community took immediate action. Within a year, they managed to construct a 2-in-1 semi-permanent classroom using available resources and materials salvaged from the burned-down infrastructure,” Iki said.
He highlighted that SUDA stepped in this year to further support the school’s recovery by funding the construction of a modern 4-in-1 classroom building.
“With the help of SUDA and the resilient spirit of the community, the new facility was completed recently and is now being used by students,” Iki said.
Mapumanda Primary School Headteacher Kandeo Aperao said the initiative not only restored educational infrastructure but also symbolized the strength and unity of the Mapumanda community.
Aperao acknowledged that the use of burned roofing irons and timber posts which played a significant role in the early stages of rebuilding, showing the community’s commitment to ensuring students could continue learning despite setbacks.
“The intervention by SUDA was timely and life-changing for our students,” Aperao said.
“Our children are now learning in proper classrooms, and we are deeply grateful.” Aperao
He said that Mapumanda Primary School now stands as a shining example of how collaboration between local communities and development partners can restore hope and opportunity in the face of adversity.
