SEASONED politician and former Madang Governor Peter Yama has called for fair and respectful campaigning as he vies for the Usino-Bundi Open seat in the upcoming by-election.
During a gathering with locals in the district over the weekend, Yama encouraged fellow candidates to refrain from personal attacks and instead focus on presenting clear policies and facts to the people.
He reminded all participants that the right to contest is protected by the Constitution and must be honoured.
“Every individual who nominated deserves to be treated with dignity,” Yama said. “Let’s not drag each other down—let the people choose based on truth, not deception.”
Yama, who leads the People’s Labour Party, is known for his long-standing involvement in politics and this time, he is anchoring his campaign on principles of honesty, experience, and leadership, urging others to lift the quality of political dialogue during the campaign period.
“The people are watching and listening. We must respect their intelligence and not manipulate them with lies or empty promises,” he added.
Though campaigning began on a low note after nominations closed, activity has picked up in recent days with the arrival of key national leaders backing various candidates.
