FIVE police officers were seriously injured in a traffic accident at Barakau along the Maggi Highway in Central Province on Saturday and are now admitted to the hospital in Port Moresby seeking medical treatment.

Central Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Joseph Salle confirmed that the five police officers, who are members of the Central Highway Patrol Unit, were doing their normal motorist patrol along the highway when they were involved in the serious accident.

He said the accident happened at around 2 PM and involved a police hired vehicle that was traveling from Port Moresby heading toward Gaire when it collided with a 10-cubic dump truck belonging to Kana Construction Company traveling from Gaire to Port Moresby.

He said both vehicles were damaged and the driver of the dump truck escaped into the bush while five police officers were seriously injured.

“The dump truck is higher than the Toyota Land Cruiser, so the impact on the police vehicle was serious and affected the police officers.

They were rushed to the hospital by St. John’s Ambulance.

PPC Salle further added that the police traffic units had begun their investigation, but they are yet to locate the driver of the dump truck, who is still on the run and urged the driver to surrender to the police and clear himself in court.

He also thanked the Commander NCD/Central, Benjamin Turi, and NCD Metsupt for their assistance in helping the injured police officers seek quick medical treatment and also the people of Barakau and the others who assisted the police officers during the accident.
