National Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) Director Anthony Rayappan has commended Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa for sponsoring 19 students from the province to pursue higher education in India, describing the move as a “life-changing opportunity” for young Papua New Guineans.

Speaking at a farewell dinner on Saturday, Rayappan said the initiative was a milestone in broadening education pathways for students who completed their schooling through the FODE system.

“This is a privilege and an honour for you to represent your community, your family, and your province,” Rayappan told the students. “You are making your parents and guardians very proud.”

The selected students have diverse academic backgrounds, but all have one thing in common, they completed their secondary education through FODE, a program designed to give second-chance learners an opportunity to upgrade their qualifications.

Rayappan, who has worked in PNG’s education system for decades, said the Governor’s decision to invest in these students was a testament to the value of creating alternative learning opportunities.

“Unfortunately, many talented young people don’t get opportunities because of the limited spaces in mainstream schools. But if you give them a chance, they can do very well,” he said.

The 19 students will join other PNG nationals already studying in Indian universities. Rayappan said their success will not only reflect positively on themselves and their families, but also on the province and the FODE program.

He encouraged them to adapt quickly to the new academic environment, make use of online resources, and focus on their studies. “You are going there for one purpose — to complete your studies. When you come back with a degree, you will make yourselves, your families, and your province proud,” he said.

The Governor’s sponsorship covers tuition, travel, and initial living expenses, giving the students the foundation they need to succeed overseas.
