THE Min Tribe proudly displayed its rich traditions during St. Gabriel’s Technical Secondary School’s 50th Pre-Independence Anniversary celebration in Kiunga.

In a colorful highlight, Mr. Kevin Ifayok, a teacher from the Angiakmin subtribe, dressed in full traditional attire and joined his students in a spirited cultural dance. His participation symbolized the intergenerational transmission of Min heritage, reinforcing the message that culture is not only taught but lived.

Students also took the stage to explain the significance of their customs. Mr. Josel Bukulieng, representing the young men, spoke on the initiation process known as Mafum, the first step toward manhood.

He said the practice strengthens initiates and prepares them to take on family and community responsibilities.

Mr. Ifayok further explained the unique Sel Kambang (penis gourds), or Kamen in the local language, which distinguish the Min Tribe from neighboring groups. While the Western Min’s version is straight and pointed, the West Sepik Min’s is curved or coiled, making them unique ceremonial attire.

Meanwhile, Ms. Adesha Botok represented the women, showcasing elaborate traditional costumes. Her headdress combined feathers of the bird of paradise (Karom Kait), cassowary (Kumsup), and parrot (Dafalim), along with shell money (Bonangamit), often used in bride price. She explained the significance of tulip bilums, both large (Men Bugum) for everyday use and smaller ones reserved for ceremonies.

Her attire also featured the Sang grass skirt, distinct from those of neighboring Awin and Yongom tribes, as well as symbolic body paint of red, white, and black, drawn from mud, limestone, and ash.

The performance, enriched by both students and their teacher, served as a vivid reminder that Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage continues to thrive, honored by the young and upheld by their elders.
