THE Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) is excited to announce the official line-up of 12 teams for the upcoming 2026 season, marking a significant step forward for rugby league in PNG.

PNGNRLC is proud to welcome a new franchise, the Kandes Rugby Football League Club (RFLC), who will be based and playing out from Madang Province.

The inclusion of the Kandes RFLC reflects PNGNRLC’s commitment to expanding the reach of rugby league across the country.

Their inclusion is reflective of the continued drive to enhance the national Pathways system, providing fresh opportunities and grow the game, but with strict adherence to compliance requirements.

The inclusion of the Kandes follows the decision to not re-issue the Kimbe Cutters a license for participation in the competition for the 2026 season.

PNGNRLC Chairman, Adrian Chow, acknowledges the “Cutters’ contribution to the competition over previous years and the PNGNRLC remains committed to working closely with the club to support their potential return to the competition, once the required entry criteria have been met.”

While undergoing the end of season annual review process, it was noted that the Cutters RFLC did not meet all the set conditions of their annual license and the management recommended to the board concerns on the club’s license.

The board approved the recommendation not to renew the license.

This annual review has been done to all existing 12 clubs and they’ve been advised on the status of their club licenses.

And this will continue in the years to come, as we keep on work on the Club professionalism pillar of our Strategic Plan, amongst many, the aim to make our NRLC clubs ‘’pathway club’’ across the country.

Explaining the process, General Manager of Pathways and Participation, Tony Archer, stated that all clubs are issued licenses to compete in the competition.

All clubs participate in a thorough assessment on their ability to meet a set of criteria that ensure they are moving toward professionalism.

Despite the difficult decision, we have arrived at, our role is to ensure the game continues to improve and grow at all levels as we head to the future. We are committed to continue to work close in the Kimbe area to support and further grow the game.”

PNGNRLC continues to champion the growth of rugby league throughout Papua New Guinea.

The addition of the Kandes and the ongoing support for the Kimbe Cutters highlight the league’s dedication to fostering new talent, strengthening community ties, and ensuring a competitive and inclusive environment for all participants.

The 2026 season promises to deliver exciting action and showcase the best of PNG rugby league.

PNGNRLC thanks all clubs, players, sponsors, and supporters for their ongoing passion and commitment, and looks forward to an exciting season ahead.
