WITH just two years left before the 2027 National General Elections, the government says police are preparing to handle law and order across the country.

During Question Time in Parliament yesterday, Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa asked the Minister for Internal Security, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, what plans are in place to provide security in all provinces, districts, and the capital city during the next elections as election related violence is a challenge.

In response, Minister Tsiamalili said the government is increasing police numbers and improving the force’s capacity. He admitted there are challenges with middle management and the ability of provincial police commanders to take full control, but said improvements are being made.

the minister announced that this week, 300 new police recruits will be added, bringing the total number of new recruits this year to 700.

The goal is to recruit 1,400 officers each year, with the long-term plan to reach 10,000 regular police personnel.
He said the police force is also focusing on building a stronger and more disciplined culture, with a five-year probation for new recruits and a strict “one strike and you are out rule for misconduct.

Minister Tsiamalili assured the Parliament that the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNG) will be ready to provide security for the 2027 elections and continue maintaining peace and order across the country.
