PNG POPULATION OVER 10 MILLION

THE long-awaited results of the 2024 National Population Final Figures was officially launched by the National Statistics Office last night at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby.

Prime Minister James Marape in officially launching the 2024 National Population Final Figures, that was referenced back to 16th of June of 2025.

Prime Minister Marape in his remarks, congratulates Acting national Statistician Mr John Igitoi for a job well done in delivering a successful result under the leadership of Minister of Administrative Services and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Constitutional Matters, Richard Masere.

“Population must drive the nation’s development planning, and it is important the country knows the population statistics, especially for government agencies, stakeholders who are allocated funds for development to know the statistic and plan for equal distribution of goods and services,” PM Marape said.

He also mentioned that the government will look into conversations and policies for birth control and population control and also encouraged all couples to consider the cost of living, raising a child is a very expensive exercise.


With technical support from the United Nations Population Fund, the 2024 National Census, the government of Papua New Guinea K150 million for the census exercise, taking 1 year and 3 months for the final population figures to be finalised.


National Statistician, John Igitoi says the 2024 census information is a direct Response to the rapid growth in the demand for population and geographical data, particularly at lower levels of planning.
With Technical support from the United Nations Population Fund, the 2024 National Census was costed K150 million fully funded by the National Government. The census exercise was carried out in 1 year, 3 months.

Present to launch the final figures of the 2024 National Population census was Prime Minster James Marape along with the Minster for Administrative Services and Minister assisting the Prime Minster in Constitutional Matters, Richard Masere, and aslo witnessed by New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Peter Zwart, UNDP Country Representative Saira Shameem amongst other dignitaries and invited guest.
