MORE rain is expected across Papua New Guinea for the rest of this year and into the beginning of next year.

The National Weather Service says the country is now fully into its monsoon season, or rainy season, which runs from November to April.

Assistant Director of Forecasting and Warning, Mr Benjamin Malai, says the recent heavy downpour over the weekend was caused by a very active rain band over PNG.

He says this system brought rain to many parts of the country, including the Highlands, Momase and the New Guinea Islands.

Mr Malai says the country will continue to receive regular rainfall, especially in the afternoons, as moisture levels remain high.

He adds that winds are now shifting from the south-east to the north-west, which is a normal pattern during the monsoon season. As this change continues, PNG can expect more wet weather over the coming months.

Mr Malai is urging the public to take note of any weather updates from the National Weather Service during this rainy period.
