THE family of the conjoined twins, Tom and Sawong, has confirmed the passing of Baby Tom following an emergency separation surgery at the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

The twins were urgently transferred from Paradise Private Hospital in Port Moresby last week after Tom’s condition deteriorated. Further medical examinations were done in Sydney that were not available in PNG revealed that Tom had very little chance of survival after separation.

Yesterday, doctors proceeded with an emergency operation. As the family described, “One body with two souls went into the theatre. After seven hours of surgery, there were two bodies and two souls.

Tragically, Baby Tom did not survive the procedure. However, doctors have confirmed that Sawong made it through the separation and is recovering.

The family expressed deep sorrow at the loss of Tom, but also gratitude that Sawong has survived. They thanked the medical teams in both Port Moresby and Sydney for their efforts and ask the public for prayers during this difficult time.
