NFA PATROL VESSELS TO STRENGTHEN FISHERIES GOVERNANCE AND PROTECT PNG’S SOVEREIGN WATERS

A significant milestone was reached yesterday for the National Fisheries Authority, in commissioning two fisheries patrol vessels, Vanimo and Ilakini at the KCH Wharf, down town, Port Moresby.
NFA Managing Director Mr Justin Ilakini in his opening remarks, says the commissioning of the fishing vessels marks a significant milestone in NFA’s collective efforts to strengthen fisheries governance, protect the Nation’s sovereign waters, and safeguard the sustainability of Papua New Guinea’s marine resources.
The event brought together government leaders, security agencies, bilateral and regional partners whose continued cooperation and partnerships remains critical to the success of the of the fisheries management and maritime surveillance support.
Mr Ilakini says, the commissioning of the fisheries patrol vessels signals a broader and long-term commitment by the Marape-Rosso government to invest in maritime capability and inter agency collaboration.
Meanwhile, Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Hon. Jelta Wong also stated the commissioning of the vessels reflects the government’s firm control, commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereign waters, advancing maritime security and ensuring that fisheries continue to contribute meaning fully to national development.
Minister Wong says, PNG has a vast ocean and fisheries valuable resources, the nation must remain vigilant as the government continues to invest in capabilities that supports national development, national security, and economic resilience.
Minister Wong further says this milestone also highlights the importance of a strong and enduring partnership, and extends the government sincere appreciation to all bilateral partners; Japan, Indonesia, Australia, United States of America and the Republic of China for their continued corporation across security, fisheries management, maritime surveillance and capacity building.
He says these partners play a vital role in strengthening regional stability, supporting sustainable resource management and enhancing collective ability to respond to emerging maritime challenges.
