THE tourism industry has emerged as a vital economic driver for many regions around the world, offering opportunities for economic growth, cultural exchange, and environmental conservation.

The recent official commissioning of the Pigeon Conservationist Island in the Duke Of Yoke Island of East New Britain Province on Saturday, 20 December 2025, marked a significant milestone in tourism development, following the official commissioning of the Somare Memorial Park and the new Hot Springs facilities in Rabaul on 16 September 2025

East New Britain Province possesses immense potential as a tourism destination, with its rich collection of World War II relics and iconic natural and cultural sites that enhance the province’s natural beauty.

East New Britain Governor, Hon. Michael Marum is committed to making tourism a key driver of growth and community development across the province.

He aims to position East New Britain as the Tourism Hub of Papua New Guinea and a popular destination within the Pacific region.

Governor Marum engaged approximately 60 unemployed youths to complete the Pigeon Conservationist Island project within a period of eight weeks. The resort is located in the scenic Duke of York Islands in the Kokopo District of East New Britain Province.

The Pigeon Conservationist Island focuses on conservation efforts while offering a unique tourism attraction, further diversifying the province’s tourism offerings and attracting more visitors.

It is expected to become a key highlight of East New Britain’s tourism landscape, providing visitors with a distinctive experience while strengthening the local economy.

The project also creates new opportunities for the local communities of the Duke of York Islands and promotes East New Britain’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. These initiatives are expected to attract both domestic and international visitors, generating sustainable economic benefits for the people of East New Britain Province.

During the Opening Ceremony, office of the Governor under the leadership of Hon. Michael Marum presented Cheques to financially support the churches in Duke of York Island.
