THE Imbonggu District Development Authority (IDDA) has signalled a renewed focus on leadership and service delivery following the swearing-in of three Local-level Government (LLG) presidents in Ialibu, Southern Highlands Province.

The swearing-in ceremony and IDDA board meeting were held this month at the Western Pacific University (WPU) Hall.

Those sworn in were Tapoiye Natil (Imbonggu Proper), Robert Dopo (Ialibu Basin) and James Embia (Lower Mendi). They were officially sworn in by Ialibu-Pangia Senior Magistrate Pinson Pindipia.

Acting Imbonggu District Chief Executive Officer Paul Kereme, who officiated at the ceremony, thanked Western Pacific University for providing the venue and acknowledged the presence of Minister for Justice and Attorney-General Pila Niningi, IDDA board members, councillors and invited guests.

Mr Kereme commended the IDDA board for its work to date and called for continuity in leadership.

“Our people are our priority and service delivery must remain our focus,” he said. “We are here to serve.”

He said he looked forward to working closely with the IDDA team, LLG presidents and councillors to improve development outcomes for Imbonggu district and the wider Southern Highlands Province.

Minister Niningi said leadership challenges had contributed to past administrative problems in the district.

“There was a lack of leadership and proper control mechanisms, particularly in the management of district assets such as vehicles and machinery,” he said.

He said recent leadership changes were necessary to restore accountability and effective management.
Mr Niningi also dismissed claims of favouritism regarding the appointment of Mr Kereme as acting CEO.

“I did not appoint Mr Kereme because he is my brother,” he said. “He was appointed based on merit.”

He added that changes in leadership were necessary when administrations failed to meet expected performance outcomes, in the best interests of the people of Imbonggu.
