THE East New Britain Provincial Disaster Centre is urging citizens to take immediate precautions following a national heavy rain and flood warning issued from National Weather Service, which forecasts severe weather for the province over the next 24 hours.
The National Weather Service warns of heavy rainfall, scattered thunderstorms, and potential gale force winds over the Bismarck Sea. This combination raises the risk of flash flooding, river flooding, and landslides.
In response, the ENB Provincial Disaster Director, Mr. Donald Tokunai, has identified the North Coast areas, the inland regions, and island communities as being of particular concern for landslides and flash flooding.
Director Tokunai is advising all communities in these at-risk zones, and across the province, to take precaution by identifying dangers and taking necessary actions to avoid them.
The weather warning is in effect from yesterday afternoon through today, Monday. Conditions at sea are also expected to be rough to very rough, with a gale warning current for the Bismarck Sea.
The Disaster Office advises the public to monitor conditions, avoid flooded rivers and roads, secure loose items, and prepare for potential disruptions.
