BANK South Pacific has resumed operations at its Porgera Branch, restoring access to banking services for nearly 19,000 customers across the district.

The BSP branch the only bank in Porgera that was closed in September 2024 due to security concerns was re-opened last month following strengthened measures to ensure a safe and supportive operating environment.

BSP Highlands Area Manager, John Tomba Jnr, says the reopening reflects BSP’s commitment to community livelihoods and economic activity.

Meanwhile BSP Treasury & Markets Group Head, Leighton Crisp, highlighted the branch’s critical role in supporting the New Porgera Gold Mine and the wider PNG economy.

Community leaders have welcomed BSP’s return, noting the importance of banking services for everyday transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, school fee payments, and SME financing.

Beyond in-branch services, BSP continues to expand financial access in Porgera making banking more accessible through two ATMs, 40 EFTPOS merchants and three cash agents.

BSP says it remains committed to working closely with local communities to maintain a secure environment that enables essential services to operate sustainably.
