FIVE frontline workers attending to victims of Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in volatile areas up in the Highlands were trained on basic first aid by Medecins Sans Frontieres in Banz, Jiwaka, last week.

PNG Tribal Foundation President GT Bustin thanked French Embassy in Port Moresby for providing funding support which had brought officers from different areas to Banz, attended the first aid medical training.

Bustin thanked Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors without borders for running the vital training for the officers attending to incidents in the remote parts of highlands where first aid is needed.

Project Coordinator for Medecins Sans Frontieres, Rachel Wehrung, as part of the MSF’s partnership with local NGO’s, said the trainings were important for the staff of Tribal Foundation, who are frontline workers who often deal directly with victims of violence.

They will utilize the knowledge and skills attained in this training to assist the survivors. The one-day workshop was collaboratively facilitated by the MSF Medical Team- Nursing and Mental Health team.

She said the medical First Aid covered topics on person safety, Bleeding control, Fracture splint, Burns/Wound Care and mastering the skills on saving Choking patients (Adult and Paediatrics).

In addition, the mental health session introduced psychological first aid, focusing on the qualities of a good helper, identifying signs of distress in adults and children, referrals to the FSC, having good communication skills, and self-care.

Frontline officer (named) thanked PNG Tribal Foundation for such an opportunity training for the first time which now equip them not only assist provide support in logistics but also medical assistance on the ground.
“I would like to take this time to appreciate our Tribe team in Moresby, especially our national coordination Marjorie Finkeo and our President GT Bustin for allowing us to get this training from Doctors Without Borders.

“We went through psychological and Medical first aid training and we discovered a wonderful presentation by the team which had helped us a lot,” he said.
