LOCAL Police in Kagua, Southern Highlands Province has been attacked by a warring tribe yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

Police vehicles were attacked and damaged with stones and sticks allegedly by Wambea tribesmen, and the officer Mathew Gene who was driving, would have had his hand chopped off with bushknives if he had not accelerated, bumping off boulders that were placed on the road to block their passage.

No injuries were sustained though.

The attack happened when Police were patrolling the Gulf Southern Highlands Highway outside Kagua station, to maintain peace after a tribal clash on Tuesday that had left nearby Marili village burnt by Mirupa tribe.

The incident happened near Rogoma village in Kagua LLG, Kagua Erave District.

According to constable Jonah Kosen, the local police on ground were trying their best to quell the tension between Mirupa and Wambea tribes without any additional manpower support.

This incident has frustrated citizens and community leaders who have been desperately calling on the Southern Highlands Provincial Government and Provincial Police Commander to help to safeguard Kagua station and the innocent people.

Meanwhile, deputy District Administrator Jethro Onasu had been calling on the Provincial Administration to send additional manpower, as Mobile Squad 10 which was on ground to assist pulled out on Tuesday, while Marili village got burnt on that day.

Kagua station is now at the mercy of tribal fighters.
