THE ANZ team in PNG have a number of women sitting in important positions on its senior leadership team including the
recent appointment of Bernadette Shaw as its Executive Director, Institutional.

Other women continue to play a major role in ANZ’s continued success in PNG including Shira Dumba, Nerolyn Virgil, Yvonne Nesol and Margaret Biruwe.

Shira Dumba is an Associate Director in the Resources, Energy and Infrastructure (REI) part of the business based in Port
Moresby. She has been in her current role for two years, supporting clients across the resources, energy and infrastructure
sectors.

From a mixed parentage of Goroka and Madang, in which she refers to the latter as home, Shira brings a strong local
perspective to her work. She also has extensive experience supporting internationally owned and internationally backed
clients in PNG, working closely with ANZ network counterparts to deliver cross-border banking solutions.

She works closely with local, regional and offshore stakeholders to deliver outcomes that support both client objectives and PNG’s broader economic development.

Shira says the best thing about her job is the variety and impact. “I also find real satisfaction in supporting clients reach their
business goals, which is contributing to PNG’s overall economic growth.”

Another Papua New Guinean who has been with ANZ for a total of 14 years is Nerolyn Virgil. Nerolyn is an Associate Director in the Food, Beverage and Agriculture (FB&A) part of the business supporting clients that make up a large part of the PNG economy.

Originally from Central province, Nerolyn was born and raised in Lae, Morobe province and says the best part about her job is the opportunity to contribute meaningfully, to support others, and to help shape positive outcomes.

“As a mother of two daughters, it is important to me that they see what I do, understand the value of hard work, and know that women can lead, contribute, and make a difference while still being present for their families.”

Both women acknowledged that although it can sometimes be challenging as a professional woman in PNG, both see it as an
opportunity to overcome and grow and set the example for other women and young girls in PNG to follow.

Shira’s advice to young women starting out in their careers is, “Seek out mentors and sponsors, ask questions without
apology, and be open to opportunities in unfamiliar environments as that’s where growth happens fast.“ Nerolyn agreed,
adding, “Believe in yourself, and never underestimate your potential.”

While both Shira and Nerolyn are based in the Port Moresby head office, Yvonne Nesol is the Regional Manager based in the Lae office, and Margaret Biruwe is branch manager in Goroka. Both women have been with ANZ for over 15 years combined.

ANZ Country Head Papua New Guinea, Andrew Betteridge, said, “With Bernadette’s recent appointment, the depth of our
women leaders here in Papua New Guinea continues to grow, which I’m very proud of. To have our Lae and Goroka branches led by women is a credit not only to themselves but testament to ANZ’s values.”

“Congratulations to all the women in our business who continue to play an integral part in ANZ’s long-term commitment to
Papua New Guinea.”
