PAPUA New Guinea’s new foreign policy will strike a balance between maintaining global friendships and protecting national interests.

Prime Minister James Marape said while the country remains committed to its “friends to all” approach, it will not allow foreign relations to compromise sovereignty or economic priorities.

He stressed that all international engagements must respect PNG’s borders, resources, and people.

The Prime Minister added that the policy signals a more assertive stance in diplomacy, ensuring partnerships are mutually beneficial and aligned with national development goals.

Marape noted that as global competition intensifies, PNG must make decisions that safeguard its long-term interests while continuing to respect other nations.

The approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for strategic positioning in a rapidly changing world.
