HEALTH concerns are mounting in New Ireland Province as authorities race to identify a mysterious chemical found in fish in Kafkaf Village.

Fisheries Minister Jelta Wong in parliament has confirmed that tests are still underway, with officials yet to determine the exact substance contaminating the fish.

The uncertainty has raised serious alarm among health authorities, with the Minister stating that the nature of the chemical will determine the level of risk to communities who may have already consumed the fish.

Minister Wong says without scientific confirmation, the government cannot yet advise on the long-term health effects or possible treatment options.

Hw said the villagers have been urged not to eat fish from the affected area until further notice.

Wong said authorities are working against the clock, with test results expected within one to two weeks, which will guide the government’s next steps.
