PNG CHIEFS CATALIST FOR SPORTS TOURISM

PNG Chiefs entry in the National Rugby League (NRL) would become a powerful driver of tourism and international recognition for Papua New Guinea.

In welcoming Australian rugby league star Zac Lomax as Chiefs 005, Prime Minister James Marape stressed that, the Chiefs have enormous potential to become a catalyst for sports tourism.

He emphasised that international players, officials, supporters and media will travel to Papua New Guinea and will experience the country’s spectacular natural beauty, the unique cultures and the warmth and hospitality of the people.

The Prime Minister said that there is expectation of the PNG Chiefs to attract more visitors, stimulate domestic tourism, create business opportunities and elevate Papua New Guinea’s profile on the global stage.

The Prime Minister made these remarks following the recent signing of Zac Lomax on behalf of the government and the people of Papua New Guinea calling it as a major milestone in Papua New Guinea’s push for historic entry into the National Rugby League (NRL).

PM Marape said Lomax’s decision reflects growing international confidence in PNG’s vision to build a world‑class NRL club that will unite the nation and showcase the country globally.

He described Lomax as a world‑class player, noting his experience with the Australian Kangaroos and NSW Blues in State of Origin and commended Lomax and his family for joining the campaign, stressing that the PNG Chiefs represent more than a team — they are a national movement to inspire young Papua New Guineans.

Prime Minister Marape further says that the nation is looking forward not only to seeing Zac perform in the Chiefs jersey, but also to seeing him inspire young Papua New Guineans to dream big, work hard and contribute positively to the nation.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also welcomed the strong family support shown by the PNG Chiefs new signings as it prepares for its inaugural entry to the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2028 saying it has been wonderful to see new players embracing Papua New Guinea together with their families.

The Prime Minister acknowledges Zac Lomax’s parents, his fiancée, his management team and everyone who has supported him throughout his career adding their presence demonstrates the strong family values that are shared by both Papua New Guinea and the PNG Chiefs.
