WITH critical blood donation by members of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, two mothers in Pomio are recovering well and their babies are safe.
One mother was severely anaemic and operation was scheduled for 5th August 2026. Another was pregnant with twins and due for caesarean section operation. Both required blood type ‘O’, and were admitted at Pomio District Hospital in Palmalmal, East New Britian.
A request was made through the Director of Maritime Preparations Commander (Navy) Douglas Inau who directed His Majesty’s PNG Ship (HMPNGS) Francis Agwi to assist.
Dr Christine Tipayamb of the Pomio District Hospital was very grateful for the help. She expressed her gratitude for the medical assistance given by HMPNGS Francis Agwi ship’s company who sent two sailors with blood type O to donate a bag each to the mothers.
Dr Tipayamb said the severely anaemic mother had given birth to a normal healthy female baby and had tubal ligation after delivery. She was recovering well.
“The other mother had identical female twins by caesarean section. The twins look underweight but are heathy. The mother is recovering well,” she said.
HMPNGS Agwi was in Pomio to assist the PNGDF and Department of Defence Team who were there to do a site assessment on the proposed Jacquinot Bay Forward Operations Base.
