BASIL FAMILY EXPRESS CONCERNS ON COURT DELAY
THE family of Late Sam Basil, former Member for Wau-Bulolo, have expressed their concern over the prolonged period it has taken for a decision to be made regarding the charges against Matthew Barnabas, who is alleged to have caused the deaths of Late Sam Basil and Late Neil Maino.
Matthew Barnabas was initially arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing death in June 2022, and has been in and out of the Lae National Court since then.
Elder son Ruma Basil, speaking on behalf of the family, said his family appreciates the diligence taken by the Police to ensure the suspect was charged and made appearances in court, however, as they begin a new year it is their desire to finally see this matter concluded.
He says after two and a half years of investigation and court proceedings, they have been patiently waiting for the day their father receives justice for his untimely death and request the trial for this matter begin at the court’s earliest convenience.
He says they understand that the court has its processes and acknowledge that other cases also require the National Court’s attention.
However, they feel this matter should not be prolonged any further than necessary.
Mr Basil adds that his family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to those in the general public who have remained committed to this matter, and thanked them for their continued support, prayers, concern and attendance toward the proceedings.
