THE Gender and Equality team at Mamba village in Kokoda, Oro Province, hosted a vibrant International Women’s Day celebration yesterday.

The occasion was observed peacefully, local women from various Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) showcased a diverse range of local products, including plants, arts and crafts (bilums), and colorful designs.

The event also brought together women, children, and men to honor those women who have lost their lives to domestic violence, as well as those who are suffering from abuse and discrimination.

The theme of the event focused on combating discrimination against women and promoting gender equality.

During the event, Kokoda LLG Women’s Representative Anna Jinga, expressed her concern about the ongoing violence against women.

She said, there are countless instances of brutality, domestic violence, and torture that mothers and girls endure, some of which are known, while others remain hidden.

Some victims have lost their lives, while others are left with permanent disabilities.

She added on by addressing gender discrimination, stating that, “Gender equality must prevail at all times”.

Jinga urged men to respect their mothers, sisters, and wives whilst also emphasising that women in Papua New Guinea and around the world deserve mutual respect and equal treatment alongside men.
