CHINESE NATIONAL APPREHENDED FOR SMUGGLING GOLD

POLICE and the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority have arrested a Chinese national who was about to board a plane with 36 kilograms of gold at Jackson Airport this morning (Monday, December 8, 2025).

The commander of NCD and Central Provinces, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Turi, confirmed that the individual was immediately apprehended after his check-in and was escorted for questioning at the Bomana Immigration Detention Center with the support of Customs Enforcement Officers.

He said all evidence, including the seized exhibits, has since been formally handed over to the PNG Customs Team to undertake their respective processes to formally have him arrested and charged in collaboration with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary officers tomorrow.

He said this joint action ensures that the matter is fully processed under the relevant laws governing the illicit movement of commodities, false declarations, and transnational smuggling activities.

The Chief Migration Officer also commended the swift, coordinated efforts of both Immigration and Police personnel involved in today’s operation.

Their professionalism, vigilance, and commitment reflect the increasingly strong intelligence-driven enforcement posture of the Authority.

The CMO further issued a clear message to the general public, all foreign nationals, and particularly the Chinese business community.

PNG Immigration maintains a highly active field presence across all ports of entry and will continue to interdict, intercept, and decisively deal with anyone attempting to engage in illicit activities, including gold smuggling, illegal trade, visa fraud, or any conduct that undermines the laws and security of Papua New Guinea.

The Authority reiterates its mandate to protect the integrity of PNG’s borders and will continue working closely with partner agencies to uphold national security and the rule of law.

Commander Turi also added that there are many such incidents happening, and the police are working with the respective authorities to ensure that those involved are arrested and prosecuted.
