CAPTION: Farmers crossing rivers carrying loads of their produce to the market

THE Markham Smart Farmers Association is calling on all levels of government to urgently improve road and bridge infrastructure to support farmers across the district.

Association president John Gaif said despite years of coverage in both social and mainstream media, there has been little to no response from authorities.

“Despite all the awareness raised over the years, there is still zero attention given to this issue,” Mr Gaif said.

The association represents more than 1,200 members across 74 wards and four Local Level Government areas in Markham District.

Mr Gaif said farmers, particularly from Onga Wafa, have been crossing rivers on foot carrying heavy loads of fresh produce for decades to reach markets and access basic services.

“This has been happening for years. Our farmers risk their lives daily just to earn a living,” he said.

He added that similar challenges are faced by farmers from Leron Wantoat Local Level Government area, where poor road conditions continue to limit access to markets.

Due to the deteriorating state of the road, a single passenger pays up to K100 for a return trip between Wantoat and Lae, excluding additional costs for transporting cargo.

Mr Gaif said the high cost of transport and ongoing risks have discouraged many farmers from actively working their land.

“This is affecting the morale of our farmers. When access is difficult and costly, people lose motivation,” he said.

He said improving road links and building permanent bridges would reduce costs, improve safety and encourage farmers to increase production.

Mr Gaif added that reliable and efficient services would not only support farmers but also help reduce rural-urban migration and related social issues.

The association is now urging immediate government intervention to address the long-standing challenges affecting rural communities in Markham.
