PORT Moresby General Hospital continues to transform heart care in Papua New Guinea through its state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory or Cath Lab.

Since opening in 2021, the Cath Lab has successfully performed around 2,000 procedures, handling 50 to 60 cases each month. With steady supplies and resources, the facility has the capacity to expand to 60–80 cases monthly more than 1,000 procedures every year.

The Cath Lab provides a wide range of advanced services, from coronary angiograms and stenting to pacemaker implantation, stroke intervention and congenital heart disease device closures.

These services are saving Papua New Guineans millions of kina. A coronary angiogram and stent overseas can cost up to K150,000, while the same procedure at PMGH costs less than K10,000.

Equipped with world-class technology and supported by highly skilled specialists, including interventional cardiologist Dr Pham Cong Nam, the Cath Lab is delivering care comparable to facilities abroad right here at home.

PMGH says it remains committed to strengthening specialised medical services and ensuring more Papua New Guineans can access advanced, life-saving treatment locally.
