LNG BENEFITS MUST BE SHARED EQUALY; PNGEITI CALLS

THE PNG Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PNGEITI) has called on enhanced transparency in the distribution of benefits from the PNG Liquified Natural Gas Project (PNGLNG).
The project nearing two decades of operations declared it is debt free as of December 2025 with all stake holders relieved of their debit obligations.
PNGEITI National Secretariat Executive Director Mr. George Kauli congratulated this milestone achievement for all stakeholders led by the project operator ExxonMobil (PNG).
“This achievement is testament of excellence in the oil and gas business happening in PNG- a major boost for our country as an investment destination as well as for the project lead and its partners as global leaders in the oil and gas business’. Kauli said.
The trickle effect of this development will see increased benefit flows. PNGEITI encourages all stakeholders to be more transparent by way of demonstrating enhanced wealth distribution now that the project is completely debt free.
“Whilst I extend my commendation to all players involved in this multi-billion kina project for achieving such a milestone since the first LNG shipment out of our shore, I call on the state and all players not to forget their obligation towards the people of PNG, in ensuring that all proceeds are spread equitably among the citizens”.
“Whilst the final repayment of the total project debt brings hope and optimism, this will have no meaning to ordinary citizens if the wealth does not trickle right down to the people,” said Mr. Kauli.
“There must be transparency in the way the benefits are equitably distributed right down to the community,” he said.
“Our people need economic opportunities and this can only be achieved if the benefits are channeled right down to the communities,” he said.
He said the state and the developers must be people focused in ensuring spin-off benefits and wealth distribution reaches the people,” he said.
