HEAVY rain will continue to pour across the country, and more rain is expected in the coming days.
According to forecasters at the National Weather Service, a trough (pronounce trof) line and a tropical low-pressure system developed North of Australia are causing strong winds, rough seas, clouds, rain, and thunderstorms, especially in coastal and inland areas.
Rain and thunderstorms are also affecting the Highlands, Momase, NGI, and Southern regions. Flash flooding and landslides may occur in risk areas.
Meteorologist Benjamin Malai says PNG is in its normal wet monsoon season, which may continue until April as more rain fall is expected.
Very strong winds are expected from the PNG–Indonesia border to Daru, Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Sepik, Manus, New Britain, New Ireland, the Coral Sea, and the Bismarck Sea.
In the nation’s capital, strong winds and heavy rains have been experienced in recent times causing some parts of the city swelling up by floods, and also slowing down traffic at peak hours of the day.
People on the mainland, in coastal areas, and small boat operators are strongly advised to take extra care and listen for weather updates.
